Reward Offered for Missing Activist in Oaxaca

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Oaxaca (FGEO) and the State Commission for the Search for Persons of the State of Oaxaca have offered a reward of half a million pesos for information that helps locate the Ayuuk activist Sandra Domínguez, missing since October 4.

In a reward notice that includes Sandra's photograph, both institutions provide phone numbers and email addresses for anyone with vital information to contact and reveal the whereabouts of the activist.

Relatives and collectives of Sandra set up a camp in the corridor of the Government Palace since November 6, demanding a more effective search for both Sandra and her husband Alexander Hernández, who is also missing. In their complaint, they mentioned the lack of financial resources from the authorities to carry out a thorough search and requested the offer of a reward.

Aracely Cruz, a federal deputy of the PT and friend of Sandra, as well as Joaquín Galván, a friend and Ayuuk defender, have publicly spoken about the situation. Cruz demanded the location of Sandra alive, while Galván considered the reward as a late but necessary hope to find Sandra.

According to Galván, "I see it with positive eyes, with eyes of faith and hope, that’s what we have been asking for since the beginning when she disappeared. However, as long as it helps to know the whereabouts of Sandra, I see it with hope."

Sandra Domínguez is known for her work as a defender and lawyer. In 2020, she publicly reported through her social media that she was a victim of violence, revealing that the current Coordinator of Peace of Oaxaca, Donato Vargas, and other officials had used photographs of her and other Mixe women in a pornographic chat. Additionally, Domínguez is recognized for her support of women victims of violence.
